TEENAGER BEDROOM

LIMASSOL / MONGROULI -CYPRUS

When dealing with young “adults” it’s hard to create a place that houses their interests and reflects their personality

This is small-scale bedroom renovation of sixteen years old football fun which aims to create a more welcoming “grown up” lofty feeling and at the same time engage with his passion for football.

At this age teenagers explore their independence so it is very important to listen carefully their needs and preferences. At the very initial stage and before starting the design process we identified what he liked from the previous room. This together with the budget restrictions set by the parents lead us to keep the furniture and hardwood flooring. Based on these two restrictions we developed a brief to work with.

At the beginning we set a pallet of colors and materials and we started developing a concept of zones in the room –working/study area on the left, sleeping area in the center and display/lounge area on the right.

The zone concept is reflected on the ceiling and lighting design by providing different lighting for every zone area. This approach helps to have better lighting while studying and retain a relaxing atmosphere for the rest of the time.

To accommodate new lighting requirements, alternations on the electricity wiring of the ceiling were required. Thus a plasterboard design was constructed to avoid heavy scale construction work in the house.

The shape of the design is looking to clearly represent the zone - concept but retaining the ceiling height in the rest of the room.

One of the requirements of the brief was to provide a display area for the huge collection of posters which were previously stick to the walls.

To provide the flexibility of changing the posters easily, a frame design aligned with the ceiling design was introduced. We used an aluminum leaf on the background so all the posters can be stick on that using magnets.

Watercolor wave wallpaper was chosen to provide a more relaxing atmosphere and unity in the space.

In the corner of the room a plasterboard shelf design was created as an extension of the desk. – Book shelves of the box file size were design for the top selves whereas the bottom selves are bigger in size to provide a storage space for football bags after training.

Darker color wallpaper was chosen for this structure not only for obvious cleaning purposes but also for eye catching purposes. Special attention was paid on the details of this design so frosted glass elements were added to the right side to avoid hard image on the eye and lighten up the space.

Due to space limitations and appearance purposes new sliding doors were introduced for the existing wardrobe replacing the old opening doors. Additionally this system provides easy access through a single door width without having to open and shut multiple doors to reach things. Big mirror screes and frozen laminate glass were chosen for the doors to make the room appear bigger.
