FRAME - ARTISTS ANALYSIS

SEATON DELAVAL

The project’s aim was to capture and represent a chosen area of The Seaton Delaval Hall through three drawings each one of them using different technique and drawn from a different distance. The techniques used were the result of a series of analysis and experimentation on the work of Anslem Kiefer and Pablo Picasso.Depending from a distance from where each drawing was created it focused on different ideas and materials:

1st drawing from 1m: Texture, materiality
2nd drawing from 5m: Surroundings
3rd drawing from10m: Context, Perspective

Experimentation with Artist’s techniques

assignment submission: 07 / 10 / 2014

The beginning of the end of the Delaval Hall started after a devastating fire on the staircase. As you can see on my experiments the fire destroyed a big part of the hall. I was personally impressed by the contrast between the dark burnt stonework and melted iron handrail on the one hand and the powerful bright light on the other hand.

As I was experimenting with the artist’s techniques a question came to my mind and I tried to pass it on my drawings : “Can The light penetrating from the arch windows sign the hope of regeneration, and is it the Upward path of the stairs the destination to heaven?” The light in many cases refers as sign of hope or connection with the god. “God is light and in him there is no darkness at all” John 1:5

Final Drawings

“Roughness of burnt”

1st Drawing from 1m distance

The drawing pictures a close up detail of the handrail of the burnt staircase at Seaton Delaval and the stonework around the arch window. Texture paste and acrylics have been used to capture the rough texture and details of each surface. The drawing is influenced by Anslem Kiefer’s work in terms of materials used and meanings; The light penetrating from the window contrasts with the burnt metal and signs for Hope.

“Destination to...”

2nd Drawing from 5m distance

The drawing above is from a 5m distance and is a representation of the staircase. It is mainly influenced by Pablo Picasso’s cubism style and focuses on the “game” of light and shadow that predominates the buildings interior. The ideas though behind it are mainly influenced by Kiefer’s work Heaven and Earth”. The capture of the stair steps, in the image, attempts to represent the idea: Upward path: Heaven Downward path: Earth.

“Hope”

3rd Drawing from 10m distance

The third and final drawing of this synthesis attempts to communicate the hope and the reborn of the Delaval’s history, through light that is so strong and forces its way into the house at the same place that the end of the family started. In this case the light is represented by golden leaf influenced by Kiefer’s techniques as well as the icons of Christian Orthodox religion.
